* CHRISTIAN MUSIC
Guitar

Believe it or not, but there's actually quite a bit of quality Christian music around at the moment. Bands like U2 and Athlete, as well as individuals like Beyonce all have Christian belief.

As well as these more well-known bands, there are also loads of emerging groups and artists that write some decent songs about God. You can get hold of them from Christian Bookshops, or order them over the internet. Click on the links below to visit the websites for these artists.

  • Newsboys are officially my favourite Christian band - partly because they don't sound very Christian - their album ''Devotion' has great universal appeal with guest vocal input from Rebecca St. James, but revisit 'Take Me to Your Leader' and 'Step Up to the Microphone' for a bit of their classic offbeat sound.
  • Reliant K - a bit of Wheatus-esque therapy demonstrated in their latest album 'Anatomy of the Tongue in Cheek' - watch out for their US hit 'Sadie Hawkins Dance'... see also Five Iron Frenzy's site for a bit of carefree metal meets ska madness (no music downloads, though!)
  • Delirious? - Britain's most popular Christian band have started experimenting with some William Orbit-inspired techno-editing. It's not up on the site yet, but you can listen to some sample tracks from 'Glo'
  • P.O.D - the toned-down Christian 'Beastie Boys' mix a nice amount of guitar thrashing with decent lyrics.
  • I have to admit that I've got a bit of a thing for Rebecca St James... It all started with her class single 'God', and from there on it was history! She's gone a bit mental on 'Transform' with experimental dance, but stick to 'Pray' and you can't go wrong!

Sample 'n' See

There are various ways to hear a wider range of Christian music:

  • Various recording companies release 'taster' discs, with a variety of different genres and artists. The cheapest of these are priced around £1.99 for 15 tracks ('Fresh' and 'The Soundtrack' are two decent types), and should be in most Christian bookshops. Alternatively, the 'WOW' albums are the Christian equivalent of the 'NOW' series, but quite pricey.
  • One of my favourite Christian / Catholic music sites at the moment is Phat Mass - worth going just to play their intro sequence! Also, loads of stuff about Catholic celebrities, and some funny editorials.
  • There are some Christian radio stations that broadcast online - Premier Radio for the latest hists, Cross Rhythms is a diverse British site.
